I was very excited today to meet with Ian Southgate, manager of the Brentwood Community theatre to discuss working with him, and others, as a volunteer Marketing Assistant.
Brentwood’s community theatre is tucked away behind a Grade II listed building just off Shenfield Road, Brentwood; more or less opposite the War Memorial. But it deserves to shine its light far and wide because this is a gem of a theatre.
The theatre was built with the drive and determination of local people for the town to have its own Theatre.
On 2 December 1993, Brentwood Theatre opened its doors for the first time, with a double bill including a play written by Jeff Merrifield. Shenfield Operatic Society followed with an Old Time Music Hall on 3 December, before Hutton Players produced the first full-length play, Charley’s Aunt, later that month.
For the most part it is a true Community theatre used by numerous local groups; but it also commissions its own shows and this Christmas Tutti Frutti & York Theatre Royal will stage The Boy Who Cried Wolf, based on an Aesop fable.
A blizzard blows in the story of a boy;
Of villagers, sheep and,
the best Christmas jumper competition.
This is a story of 3 long winters;
One cold, one wet, one snowy.
This Christmas join Silas, a broth of a boy, a bish bash wallop of a boy, a boy who couldn’t help himself, a boy who cries Wolf!!
This beautiful warming wintery tale brings the story of a bother of a boy, a mithered mother and a grand old brass band of a granddad. All set in the village of knitters with fingers flicking, needles clicking and where every new Christmas jumper tells a tale! Suitable for 3+ and families.
The theatre is self financing and depends on hires and its own shows. It also has a programme of fundraising events to ensure the future of this wonderful facility for the people of Brentwood.
I’m really looking forward to helping to promote the theatre and foster a love of performing and the Arts.
